Artist's Comments

Been a while since I was so bothered to make a political piece. I have been reading news articles about this for weeks now. I saw a NOW interview on PBS with graphic artist and political artist Milton Glaser. Check out a sample of his work here: [link] He got me inspired to make political art again. Been fuming about the whaling issue and just had to make this. Based it on the Carl's Jr. Six Dollar Burger ad. Took 3 hours.

Yes that's right! Japan is selling whale burgers through a fast food chain. They also serve the meat through fancy restaurants, grocery stores even at certain schools. The main victims are minke whales. They kill 440 whales a year in the name of science....but they end up on the dinner table...hmmm how strange. They want to double the yearly take and expand hunting to humpbacks and fin whales They don't just hunt around their area of the Pacific...they go all the way down to Antarctica to get these whales! These whales do not belong to anyone but everyone. Other countries have turned down their request but Japan is determined to continue their "research". They've killed all kinds of whales here and there for "research". Norway and Iceland are also whaling in their own waters ignoring the ban. Their own people don't eat it or need any of it but they're doing it because Japan is buying from them. They are hunting for Japan. What's crazy is the fact that Norway and many other countries are making more money through eco-tourism than by selling whale products. Yet Norway is fighting to lift the ban to make what they are doing legal as well as expanding the hunt. AAARRGGGHH!!!!

Thank you so much for a quick response!
I finished this morning at 2am and posted...nobody looked at it. So I reposted it when I'm guessing most people are up! Thanks for adding me!

Your piece struck a chord with me. I was just browsing away when I saw the distinctive Japanese flag symbol and I knew it was going to be about the whale issue. Well done!

Yay Ditroi, go educative art! I really like things that send a message, I hadn't the faintest idea that whales were becoming a fast-food item in some countries. I just recently watched a show on PBS about whales and how Navy sonar might be causing them to go insane and beach themselves .. tragic stuff, really. Four-hundred forty whales a year seems like a lot, especially considering they don't exactly breed at rabbit speed. Thanks for your eye-opening deviation, I feel that world issues like this should get more attention.

Yeah it's so horrible. The ocean is the most abused environment cause in people's heads it doesn't belong to anyone so everyone does whatever they want. THey can sneak in take want they want, dump what they want. People can't see what's in the ocean and they think if they can't see it its not a problem. The oceans are ful of problems. it makes me sick just thinking about it. I don't go to the beach knowing how polluted the waters are. At one beach I saw so much garbage floating in the water. If you get a cut you can get really badly infected. Feel so bad for the animals living in the filth.
